JOA Surveys, LLC (JOA), is an Alaska based surveying company specializing in tides and water level measurement, vertical datums and geodetic networks.

Since 2003, we have supported shoreline mapping, hydrographic surveys, bathymetric lidar surveys, and special datum determination projects in the Gulf of Maine, Massachusetts, Chesapeake Bay, Florida Keys, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, the Gulf of Mexico, California, Oregon, the Inside Passage of Alaska, the Gulf of Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, Bristol Bay, Kuskokwim River and Bay, Bering Sea, Norton Sound, the Chukchi Sea and the Beaufort Sea.

JOA is a partnership of Erik Oppegard, Nathan Wardwell, and Mike Zieserl. We are always looking for interesting and challenging projects along the coast of Alaska and beyond.
Services
JOA Surveys, LLC (JOA) provides support for a variety of hydrographic services.
Our specialty is water-level measurement and tidal datum determination.
Water-levels are an integral part of shoreline mapping, nautical charting, tidal determination and bathymetric surveys.
We install, operate and maintain zoning, tertiary, secondary and primary water-level stations.
We have online tools for plotting, QC'n and downloading data transmitted via satellite telemetry.
This database can be used by our clients for flight planning on shoreline mapping projects and a data portal for field processing.
JOA Surveys, LLC (JOA) has the experience to provide cost-effective tide solutions for bathymetric surveys in areas with complex tidal characteristics.
We implement a variety of water-level measurement systems and installation techniques to obtain and analyze near-shore and off-shore data.
JOA has provided tide solutions for survey areas along open coast environments with slight changes in tidal range and phase, narrow water ways influenced by shallow water and meteorological tidal harmonic constituents and areas of transition from one tide type to another.
JOA Surveys, LLC (JOA) has a detailed knowledge of tidal datum determination methods for diverse tidal regimes.
The tidal datums determined are required to correct hydrographic survey soundings to MLLW for nautical charts, and they may be used to define coastal boundaries between tideland and upland owners.
Building upon specialized training from the NOAA Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS), JOA has developed extensive software toolkits in Matlab and Python for processing water level data, tabulating high and low tides and computing tidal datums by the method of Tide by Tide Simultaneous Comparisons (TBYT) or Monthly Means Simultaneous Comparisons (MMSC).
JOA Surveys, LLC (JOA) specializes in the measurement of coastal tides.
We achieve millimeter accuracy in water level measurement with the most precise equipment available and rigorous field procedures.
JOA has received specialized water level measurement training from the Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS), a line office of the National Ocean Service within NOAA.
JOA deploys a variety of water level measurement sensors, each able to fit particular environmental conditions or data requirements.
JOA Surveys, LLC (JOA) has the experience to provide all geodetic survey control needs.
We are regularly on the ground performing GPS surveys for shoreline, hydrographic, LiDAR and photogrammetric mapping.
Our surveys have been as simple as single point occupations with OPUS solutions, to complicated networks with dozens of occupations spanning hundreds of kilometers post processed to NGS specifications.
Occupations have spanned anywhere from a few minutes to a month or even more.
We are able to survey in the most remote locations in Alaska, where access may be by plane, helicopter, boat, atv, skiff, or even by foot.
