Hi, I'm Ross Hubbard, a SAMS-AMS Marine Surveyor and owner of Maritime Surveyors. My office is located in Southern California at the Channel Islands Harbor, about an hour north of Los Angeles. Ventura, Channel Islands, and Santa Barbara harbors are known as gateways to the beautiful, unspoiled California Channel Islands right off of our coastline.

The Islands are a special area that should be on your list of "must sees." Maritime Surveyors serves the entire Southern California coastline with emphasis on our local areas of Ventura, Channel Islands, Santa Barbara and Marina del Rey. My basic definition of a marine survey is an inspection of a vessel to determine its overall condition that day of the inspection.

My practical approach allows you to get a good snapshot of the boat condition the day we inspect it. Always install marine quality, marine UL-listed carbon monoxide detectors in your boat and home. While inspecting the bilge of a boat I naturally test bilge pumps, both electrically and manually operated.

A marine survey can mean different things to different people.
For instance, to an inexperienced eye, polished, shiny, and clean constitutes good condition.
To an experienced marine surveyor's eye, one that can look deeper into the boat, shiny and clean is easily looked past and problems and past issues can be spotted.
My basic definition of a marine survey is an inspection of a vessel to determine its overall condition that day of the inspection.
The marine survey should be comprehensive, thorough, and cover all systems in the boat as well as structure, cosmetic condition, include findings and recommendations, and valuation.
My practical approach allows you to get a good snapshot of the boat condition the day we inspect it.
I go through all the parts of the boat in a systematic way, pointing out systems and issues and jotting down our observations and recommendations that I then use to write the survey.
I encourage buyers and owners to be present at the survey.
I like talking about boats with you and explaining how the systems work on your boat.
Most insurance companies, banks, lenders and marinas require that your survey be done by a surveyor that is a member of either SAMS, or NAMS.
Print it out and leave it with a reliable person who can be depended upon to notify the Coast Guard or other rescue organization, should you not return as scheduled.
Do not file this plan with the Coast Guard.

Ross is a member of SAMS as an AMS so he's approved by all insurance companies, banks, lenders and marinas.
Ross checked all of the boat systems, pointed out things that needed to be fixed (just a few) and took a lot of time sharing with me his vast knowledge of what works and what doesn't.
How about the boat you own now?
After all, when you're on your boat, you, your family, crew, and passengers need and want to feel safe and secure.
A marine survey serves that need by putting an experienced set of eyes on the boat that are independent.
Even if you're an experienced, seasoned mariner, a marine survey is always worthwhile and normally required by lenders, insurance companies, and some marinas.
I can't tell you how many times I have found a dangerous, serious problem on a boat that the owner thought was OK.
I really like to talk about all things boats and would like to share my thoughts and opinions with you.
I don't know all of the answers to your boat questions but I know a lot of them and I'd like to learn something new myself.
That's the great thing about my profession, I really do learn something new every day.
Maybe you're thinking about buying a new boat or are new to boating.
Or maybe you're thinking about installing a piece a gear or system and you just need to talk the installation through.
